Plan smart
October to March is peak season across most of India — cool, dry and ideal for Rajasthan, the Golden Triangle and the south. Hill stations and Ladakh shine April–June. Avoid the monsoon (Jul–Sep) inland, but Kerala is magical in the rains.
India's railway is an adventure in itself — book AC classes early via IRCTC. For cities use Uber/Ola, prepaid taxis and metros (Delhi's is excellent). Domestic flights (IndiGo, Vistara) make long hops cheap and fast.
Remove shoes at temples and homes, dress modestly at religious sites, and use your right hand for eating and giving. A friendly "Namaste" 🙏 opens every door. Always carry a scarf for covering shoulders or head.
Drink only sealed or filtered water, ease into street food, and carry hand sanitiser. Get travel insurance and routine vaccinations. Solo and female travellers are welcome — stick to reputable hotels and pre-booked transport at night.
The rupee (₹) rules — carry small cash for markets and tips, but UPI/cards work in cities. India suits every budget: hostels from ₹600, heritage hotels ₹4,000–8,000, palace suites the sky. Tip 5–10% where service isn't included.
Grab a prepaid Jio or Airtel SIM at the airport (passport + photo needed) for cheap, fast 4G/5G nationwide. Most hotels and cafés have Wi-Fi. Download offline maps and a translation app before heading to rural areas.
